This large 18cm Fluorite slice is an exceptionally colourful specimen, displaying broad sweeping bands of deep purple, rich teal-green and lighter translucent green across the entire face. The colour zoning is particularly striking, with the contrasting bands following the natural growth of the original Fluorite and giving the slice a dramatic, almost landscape-like appearance.
One of the strongest features of this piece is its translucency. When held to the light, the greens become noticeably brighter and more luminous while the purple bands remain richly saturated, revealing far more depth within the crystal than is immediately visible under ordinary display lighting. The polished faces allow the internal colour structure to be seen clearly, while sections of the natural outer edge remain around the specimen and provide an attractive contrast with the smooth surface.
The reverse retains the same strong banding but presents it differently, with darker purple and green areas alongside sections of natural crystalline texture. Fine internal lines, fractures and variations are visible within the Fluorite, adding character and providing a clear reminder that this is a naturally formed mineral rather than a manufactured decorative material.
Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral particularly prized for the extraordinary range of colours it can display. Colour zoning develops as conditions change while the crystal grows, producing successive bands that can differ dramatically in colour and transparency. Chinese Fluorite is especially well known for producing attractive purple and green combinations such as those seen in this specimen.
