Polished Orthoceras Fossil Plate – Morocco
1 in stock
This striking polished fossil plate features five prominent Orthoceras fossils arranged naturally across a dark grey limestone matrix. The standout specimen runs almost the full height of the plate, with its pale internal chambers exceptionally clear, while four additional straight-shelled fossils of varying widths create a dramatic composition across the surface.
The polished face brings out a particularly strong contrast between the deep charcoal fossil material and lighter surrounding limestone. Numerous smaller fossil fragments are also visible throughout the matrix, adding further detail when the plate is viewed closely, while the irregular natural outer edge retains much of the character of the original stone.
Orthoceras is the name commonly used for these straight-shelled fossil cephalopods. Their elongated shells were divided internally into a series of chambers, separated by walls known as septa — a structure especially well displayed by the large central fossil on this specimen. Straight-shelled cephalopods were an important part of ancient marine ecosystems during the Palaeozoic.
With several large fossils visible across a relatively compact plate, this specimen combines strong visual impact with excellent anatomical detail and makes an especially attractive natural history display piece.
