This genuine fossilised shark vertebra belongs to Otodus, an extinct genus of large predatory sharks that inhabited the world’s oceans during the Palaeogene. Preserved partially within its original matrix, the specimen provides an interesting example of shark anatomy beyond the much more commonly encountered fossil teeth.
Otodus was a formidable marine predator and an early member of the lineage that would later produce some of the largest predatory sharks ever known. While its teeth are relatively well represented in the fossil record, vertebrae are considerably less commonly preserved because shark skeletons are primarily composed of cartilage rather than bone.
The vertebral centrum is clearly exposed against the contrasting natural matrix, retaining its distinctive circular form and concentric structure. Leaving the vertebra partially embedded gives the specimen additional geological context and makes it an attractive display piece.
Originating from Morocco, this is an unusual and highly collectable addition to a fossil or prehistoric shark collection.
