This polished labradorite freeform from Labrador, Canada measures approximately 6cm high and displays an unusually strong purple-dominant flash across much of its upper face. Purple is one of the rarer colours seen in labradorite, making specimens with a clear violet or pink-purple response particularly sought after. Here, broad areas of violet, lilac and pink appear against the dark grey stone, accompanied by smaller flashes of warm gold and orange towards the top.
The colour is concentrated across one main face and becomes especially vivid as the stone is moved through the light, shifting from muted grey to a wide band of purple and pink iridescence. The reverse is more subdued, with occasional smaller flashes near the upper edge, while the polished freeform shape and flat base allow the specimen to stand naturally for display.
Labradorite is a feldspar mineral famous for labradorescence, an optical effect produced as light interacts with microscopic internal structures within the mineral. Blue, green and gold are among the colours most commonly encountered, while strong purple and pink flashes are considerably less usual. That makes the rich violet-dominant response of this particular specimen its defining feature.
