This substantial 9.5cm Chalcopyrite specimen from Mexico has exceptional visual impact, with intense metallic colour extending across a large proportion of the natural crystal surface. Deep violet and purple dominate, accompanied by vivid flashes of electric blue, turquoise, magenta and bronze that shift noticeably as the specimen is turned in the light.
What makes this particular piece especially attractive is the amount of exposed Chalcopyrite. Rather than having only a small isolated area of colour, the iridescent mineralisation continues around several faces of the specimen, with numerous angular surfaces reflecting slightly different tones. The pale contrasting matrix makes the saturated metallic colours stand out particularly strongly and gives the specimen a dramatic, naturally sculptural appearance.
The specimen remains completely unpolished, retaining its rugged crystal texture and irregular natural form. At 9.5cm it is also a substantial piece, with excellent presence as a cabinet or shelf specimen and plenty of colour visible from multiple viewing angles.
Chalcopyrite is a copper iron sulphide and one of the world’s most important copper ores. In its natural fresh state it is typically brassy yellow, but surface oxidation can produce colourful tarnishing. On specimens sold as Peacock Ore, an acid treatment is often used to enhance and accelerate this surface reaction, producing the especially vivid purple, blue, turquoise and pink iridescence seen here. The mineral itself remains genuine Chalcopyrite; the treatment enhances the colour of its outer surface.
